Service Description

What is Skin Cancer? Skin cancer develops when skin cells are damaged, usually by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, and begin to grow abnormally. Types of Skin Cancer The three main types are: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, starting in the basal cells of the skin's lower layer. BCCs grow slowly and usually do not spread, but can damage surrounding tissues. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): The second most common type, originating in the squamous cells of the upper layer of the epidermis. SCCs can grow more quickly and have a rare chance of spreading. Melanoma: Less common but the most dangerous type, developing in melanocytes. Melanoma is more likely to invade nearby tissues and spread to other organs, making it the cause of most skin cancer deaths. Prevention Preventing skin cancer focuses on limiting UV exposure and sun damage: Sun Protection: Stay out of the sun during peak UV hours and wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses. Sunscreen: Use sunscreen regularly, reapplying as needed. Avoid Tanning Beds: Tanning beds emit harmful UV radiation, increasing your risk of skin cancer. Know Your Skin: Check your skin regularly for new or changing spots and see a doctor about any concerns. Treatment Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the cancer: Surgery: The most common treatment to cut out the cancerous cells. Radiation Therapy: Uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy: Systemic medication to treat cancer cells throughout the body. Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy: Newer treatments that use medications to target cancer cells or boost the body's immune system to fight the cancer. Other Procedures: Options like cryotherapy (freezing), curettage (scraping), and cautery (burning) can also be used.
