Portrait of a Confident Man

HAIR FALL

Hair loss is a very common reason to visit a dermatologist among both men and women.

Women tend to complain about hair loss, while men are more concerned about baldness. This is especially true during the summer, fall, and spring seasons when hair loss is more common. In contrast, there are far fewer consultations regarding this topic in winter.

HAIR CONDITIONS THAT WE TREAT AT BEDERMA

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata

  • An autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks hair follicles.

  • Causes round, smooth bald patches on the scalp or other body parts.

  • Hair may regrow spontaneously, but the condition can relapse.

Female Alopecia

Diffuse female areata

  • A type of generalized thinning of hair across the entire scalp, rather than patches.

  • Often related to telogen effluvium (many hairs prematurely enter the shedding phase).

  • Can be caused by stress, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or chronic illness.

Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia – hereditary (female or male pattern baldness)

  • Genetic hair loss influenced by androgens (male hormones, like DHT).

  • In women: gradual widening of the part and overall thinning on the crown, but the frontal hairline is usually preserved.

  • In men: receding hairline and bald spot on the crown, progressing over time.

Post-partum Alopecia

Postpartum or physiological alopecia

  • Temporary shedding of hair after pregnancy, usually 2–6 months postpartum.

  • Due to hormonal changes: during pregnancy more hairs stay in the growth phase, then after birth they all shift to the shedding phase at once.

  • Usually self-limiting, hair growth normalizes within 6–12 months.

Eczema

Seborrheic eczema or dandruff

  • A chronic inflammatory scalp condition related to overgrowth of Malassezia yeast and excess sebum.

  • Symptoms: flaking, itching, redness, greasy yellowish or white scales.

  • Dandruff is a milder form without much redness or inflammation.

Scalp psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis

  • An autoimmune skin disease that accelerates skin cell turnover.

  • On the scalp, it causes thick, silvery-white scales and plaques, often with redness.

  • Can extend beyond the hairline, and may cause itching, irritation, or soreness.

  • Unlike dandruff, the scales are thicker, adherent, and more inflammatory.
