Service Description
Molluscum contagiosum is a harmless, common viral skin infection causing small, smooth, dome-shaped bumps, often with a dimple in the center. While most common in children, it spreads through direct skin contact and shared objects, or sexually in adults, and often clears on its own in several months to a year. Treatment options, though not always necessary, include cryotherapy, cantharidin, or laser therapy. What it is The Virus: A type of poxvirus causes the infection. Appearance: Small, firm, round bumps that are skin-colored or slightly pink, often with a shiny, pearl-like surface and a small dimple in the middle. Location: Can appear almost anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In children, they are common on the trunk, face, and arms. In adults, especially if sexually transmitted, they may be found in the genital area. Who it affects Children: Most common in children between the ages of 1 and 10. Adults: Can affect adults, especially those with weakened immune systems or skin conditions like atopic dermatitis. How it spreads Direct Contact: Through direct, skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the virus. Contaminated Objects: Touching items like towels, bathing sponges, clothing, and toys that an infected person has used. Sexual Contact: The virus can be spread through sexual contact in adults. Auto-inoculation: Scratching or rubbing the bumps can spread the virus to other parts of the body. Treatment Spontaneous Resolution: Most cases will disappear on their own, typically within 6 to 12 months. Medical Treatment: If needed, options include: Cryotherapy: Freezing the lesions with liquid nitrogen. Cantharidin: A blistering agent applied to the skin. Laser Therapy: Using light to remove the lesions. Note: Treatment may be considered for cosmetic reasons or to prevent spread. Prevention Practice Good Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after touching the affected skin. Avoid Sharing: Do not share towels, face washers, and clothing with others. Don't Scratch: Avoid scratching or rubbing the bumps to prevent spreading the virus to other areas of your body.
